Two Skateboard events are planned tobenefit the effort to construct a skateboard park on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
The first event is is A Torrance skating event this weekend that will raise money for local nonprofit Skatepark PV, a group pushing for a skateboarding spot in Palos Verdes. Sunday's event, presented by Vanguard Surf and Skate, will feature trick contests, music, prizes, food and beverages. It will be held from noon until dark at 5205 Pacific Coast Highway in Torrance.
The second event will be Skatepark PV's "SK8 the Hill," an event that gives local skateboarders a chance to ride ramps and rails in Rolling Hills Esates, is scheduled for May 5 at Ernie Howlett Park.
The local nonprofit will partner with the City of Rolling Hills Estates and Beachsports to host the event that will feature free skating from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park, 25851 Hawthorne Blvd., Rolling Hills Estates.
There will also be skateboarding demonstrations from local teams throughout the day. Food trucks will be at the park to sell food and beverages to participants.
This is the second annual SK8 the Hill event in Rolling Hills Estates. The first was held in August of last year and attracted about 100 people from across the South Bay.
“It’s surprising that the South Bay, for how many skaters we have out here, doesn’t have nearly as many parks as some areas do," said professional skateboarder and co-owner of Girl Skateboards and Lakai Footwear, Rick Howard at last year's event. "A skate park here would be a good start for sure.”
